Playoff Preview- 6 Liberty VS 11 Amador Valley
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012 7:00 PM,
Liberty High School Gym
For the past eight seasons, the Sunday following the end of the regular season for the Liberty Boys basketball team would be rather uneventful. Coaches would be planning the offseason, enjoying downtime with the family. Players would begin to either focus on a spring sport such as track or baseball, or, as with the seniors, begin planning for the end of the school year- a mere three months away. On this Sunday however, things are different, much different.
This Sunday morning seemed to go by much slower than it had before. Hour by hour, they would be posted on the NCS website. Division VI. Division V. Division IV. Division III. Division II. The wait was seemingly endless. At 3:00 pm, that moment that the Lions had been waiting for, had arrived. Officially, Liberty High School Boys Basketball was in the NCS playoffs.
Liberty (20-6; 7-3 BVAL) was given the 6th seed in DI and will host 11th seed Amador Valley (15-11; 7-7 EBAL) at Liberty High School Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
The Dons have been a fairly middle of the road team this season, averaging 49.5 points scored and 49.2 points allowed per game. A strong showing got Amador off to a good start in non-league play, as they won the El Dorado Gold Dust Tournament with wins over Christian Brothers (Sacramento), Ponderosa (Shingle Springs) and El Dorado (Placerville).
A post-holiday trip to Honolulu would net the Dons a 3-1 tournament record on the island would bump their non-league record to 9-4 heading into the new year and a very tough East Bay Athletic League Schedule. A three game win streak at the end of the season over California (San Ramon), Livermore and Foothill (Pleasanton) would push their league record to 7-7 and get them into the NCS playoffs.
Although they had already won five of their first seven games, Liberty’s push for the playoffs and their season in general did not begin until December 17. The evening before, the Lions had lost their third game of the season to Dublin in the Don Nelson Classic. They would not lose again until January 24.
After a convincing win over Heritage (Brentwood) (the first win of the Patriots in program history) Liberty would go on a 10-game win streak that included winning the Hornet Classic in Redding and a second win over Heritage.
Their final win of the season, a 61-29 dismantling of Antioch) was the 20th overall. The highest for Liberty since 1985 (25-3; 10-0 FAL; 2nd place NCS playoffs in ’85). After a tough loss to Freedom (Oakley) in the finale, the Lions would finish with a BVAL record of 7-3.
The Lions strength this year has been their defense, holding teams to an average of 49.7 points per game, while scoring nearly 60 per game themselves.
With a raucous student body, and a team hungry to face Freedom again (4th seed DI) the Liberty Gym should be rocking on Tuesday night.
